About Weed & Seed

Weed & Seed is a community-based, U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) sponsored strategy that aims to revitalize neighborhoods suffering from high rates of crime. The goal is to "weed out" violent crime, drug trafficking, and gang activity and work towards preventing crime from reoccurring by "seeding" those neighborhoods with a variety of social services. The Community Capacity Development Office (CCDO) is the DOJ office that oversees the program that serves over 300 neighborhoods nationwide. CCDO's mission is to work with local communities to design strategies for deterring crime, promoting economic growth, and enhancing quality of life. CCDO helps communities help themselves, enabling them to develop solutions to public safety problems and to strengthen leadership to implement and sustain those solutions. The U.S. Attorney's Office organizes local officials, community representatives, and other stakeholders to form a steering committee. The U.S. Attorney's Office also coordinates federal, state, and local law enforcement efforts to effectively create a law enforcement and crime prevention partnership.

The overall goal is to improve the quality of life in these neighborhoods for those who live, work and play here.

Public agencies and community-based organizations collaborate to serve the community in prevention, intervention, treatment, and neighborhood restoration programs. It is with the effective cooperaton between the community and local, state, and federal agencies, that the strategy succeeds in "weeding" out the undesirable and "seeding" the good in our neighborhoods.

In 1999, the Providence neighborhood of Olneyville was selected as an official Weed & Seed site. In 2005, the site was expanded to include the Hartford neighborhood. The coordinator of Providence Weed & Seed was hosted at Olneyville's Nickerson Community Center until 2006, when the position was moved to the Facilities Management Building of the Providence Housing Authority. Located adjacent to the Hartford Park public housing development, the new location reflects the expansion of the Weed & Seed site.
